Unveiling the Global Threat of Antimicrobial Resistance

Brief

Silent Pandemic" is a feature-length documentary directed by award-winning German filmmaker Michael Wech, produced in collaboration with Black Production Films. The film delves into the escalating issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), where bacteria evolve faster than new antibiotics are developed, leading to a critical "antibiotic gap." Recognized by the World Health Organization as a "silent pandemic," this global health crisis unfolds subtly yet poses a significant threat to public health.

The Challenge:

The documentary aimed to illuminate the complexities of AMR across diverse global contexts. Pakistan emerged as a pivotal location due to its unique healthcare challenges and the prevalence of antibiotic misuse. Capturing authentic narratives in such settings required a nuanced approach to storytelling and production.

The Solution:

Under the leadership of Unit Producer Syed Zeshan Ahmed, the Black Production Films team executed a comprehensive shoot in Karachi and Hyderabad. Director Michael Wech commended the team's dedication, efficient time management, and the local hospitality, including the cuisine.

Identifying Pakistan as a critical location for the narrative, the team conducted thorough research to understand the local implications of AMR

Filming in Karachi and Hyderabad, the crew navigated logistical challenges to capture compelling stories that highlight the human impact of antimicrobial resistance. Faraz Iqbal Head Cinematographer with Red Dragon 6K and URSA Mini Pro 4.6K, while Arri Ultra Prime lenses were used to achieve a cinematic look. Bilal Mirza captured sweeping drone shots of hospital zones and cityscapes, and Fahad ensured smooth on-ground support as Production Assistant.

The documentary underwent meticulous editing to weave together narratives from eight countries, emphasizing the global scale of AMR.

THE IMPACT

"Silent Pandemic" premiered at the Ford Center for Social Justice in New York in November 2022, attracting dignitaries from the United Nations and the U.S. health sector. The documentary received acclaim for its insightful portrayal of AMR and its call to action for the international community.

By shedding light on a pressing yet often overlooked health crisis, the film has contributed to raising awareness and prompting discussions on the need for global solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance.
